For the past two years a mentor friend of mine has challenged me instead of making a New Years resolution to pick one word for the year.
The first year the word I picked was “eternal.” I wanted to focus my life on things that would matter in the next life.
Last year my word was “ENOUGH”.
God used this word in mighty ways. He showed me:
God is enough.
I am enough.
My house is enough.
The stuff that I own is enough.
The number of kids that I have is enough.
With “enough” at the front of my mind I was able to full embrace the Skinny House journey and let go of lots and lots of stuff. I was set free from fearful questions that sounded like, “what if I need this someday, what if we experience unemployment, what if I regret this?”
I found freedom to live, contented in today, living it to the full.
Today I am reading the story of when Jesus feeds the 5,000. I’ve never paid attention to verse 12, it reads: “When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over.
Let nothing be wasted.”
Jesus made sure that the whole crowd had enough. But, He didn’t stop there. He gave specific instructions to the disciples to gather all that was left over. I am reminded of the time in the Old Testament when the Jewish people were wandering in the wilderness and God fed them by sending mana from heaven. Exodus 16:4, “Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you.
The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.”
The story goes on, “Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning. However, some of them paid no attention to Moses: they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.”
I wonder sometimes if the burdens that we bear are weight that we place on our own shoulders.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yolk upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yolk is easy and my burden is light.”(Matthew 11:28-30)
Rest. A light burden.
Isn’t this what we all are longing for? Perhaps freedom comes when we declare ENOUGH! Enough shopping, enough busyness, enough trying to please other people. Enough.
So then we ask the question, “What am I supposed to do the the extra, the left over baskets that I am left holding?”
We can become distribution centers instead of warehouses.
When God rains blessings down on us from heaven we can eat until our bellies are full and then gather up what is left and pass it out. We can be the solution to so much pain and hunger if we are willing to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others and pass out the bounty instead of clinging tightly to everything for ourselves.
Where do you need rest for your soul today?
Where do you need to say, “Thank you Lord, you are enough to satisfy the deep longings of my soul.” Where do you have abundance that needs to be passed out instead of stuffed in? Let go of the fear that you have to be in control of securing enough for yourself and trust that God will continue to provide.
